The main building housing the Lick Observatory and giant telescope is a museum. Be careful as they act like the road was built for bicycles. Lots of bicyclists on either side of the mountain. On the day we went, we could see SanFrancisco and with binoculars see the skyscrapers downtown. There is a small parking lot at the main Obsevatory but the views are spectaular, we always take binoculars. Both drives are pretty but the Livermore Valley is beautiful. We chose to ascend from the Livermore Valley side and descend on fhe San Jose side. Hamiliton from either the Livermore Valley or from San Jose. I try to visit the Lick Observatory at least every few years. We all returned with exceptional and distinctive experience. The service personnel took care of me since I have knee problem. My son booked entry tickets about a fortnight before to avoid any problem and hassle on the date of visit. However, photography prohibited for commercial purpose. Photography without flash light was not prohibited.
Lick Observatory has the largest and most powerful Telescope in the world till date. In 1887, his body was moved to its final resting place, under the future home of the Great Lick Refracting Telescope.
